Eighteenth century American manuscript mathematical notebook New York State, Manuscript., 1775, sm. folio full contemp. calf. The mss. is decorated and written in red and black ink. Unique. The mss. in in generally good condition; the first five leaves and two others are defective; occ. stains. An advanced and strikingly rendered mathematical note book (perhaps instructional) that comprises appx. 250 pages and meas. 7.5 x 12 inches. The notebook contains explanations of basic and advanced arithmetic procedures but concetrates on advanced topics that relate to commercial or transactional computation. Houghtaling provides information for complex calculations for the pharmacy trade, bankers, and merchants, e.g., goldsmiths (!).In addition there are two sections devoted to mathematical amusements. In each a high degree of proficiency is exhibited - something most unusual for America during the colonial period.
