Rymill, J - ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION: Southern Lights. The Official Account of the British Graham Land Expedition 1934 - 1937 London, Chatto and Windus, 1938, 4to., orig.publisher's cloth. There are photographs and illus. throughout. First Edition. Accompanied by letters and expedition plan. A very good copy

Rymill's account of the voyage and expedition. This copy is accompanied by a TLs from Rymill, a Christmas card from Colin Bertram with a mtd. photo. of the Penola (at George VI Sound ?) the expedition's ship, and a 4 page folio mimeograph outline of the goals of a proposed second expedition (after 1938). ACCOMPANIED BY AUTOGRAPH LETTERS AND A MANUSCRIPT PLAN. A superb association copy. The material is addressed to a Capt. C Browne who may have been a prospective member of the expedition. Bertram, the biologist of the first Graham Land Expedition, was to be the leader of this new expedition. The correspondence present indicates that he was recruiting members for a journey some 500 miles further south . There is also a letter signed by Rymill requesting that the bearer be outfitted with snow googles for the journey. The mimeographed notice of the aims and annotated map of the proposed expedition could only have been issued to a small group of prospective participants of the expedition. There is a rather poignant note to the effect that the scientifc results of the 34/37 expedition would be complete in 2 yrs. and therefore it was proper to plan for a return to continue the work. The 34/37 Graham Land Expedition was the last great Antarctic expedition under sail. It was responsible for the first successful mapping of the Antarctic Peninusla and the discovery of George VI Sound.
